The Lex Leigh Trio
The Lex Leigh Trio is the main group that Lex gigs with, and it forms the backbone of many of Lex's larger ensembles. It features Lex on piano, Scott Cummings on drums, and either Steven Liu or Stefan Talmadge on bass. While Steve Liu was the original bassist for the trio, he was unavailable to play for Lex's Bachelor of Music Recital at UCI, so Stefan was brought in. He was such a great musical fit that he is also a full member of the "trio".
Scott Cummings started playing drums at the age of 16 back in his hometown of Chico, California. Scott got his first big break back in high school when he was tapped to play the gong in his high school's concert band rendition of Phantom of the Opera. This moment left a lasting impression on him, so when he enrolled in college two years later he made music his major. Scott graduated Chico State in 1999 and moved down to Southern California a few years later. Since then he has been active as a teacher and as a performer playing regularly in Los Angeles and Orange County. He's currently in the Master's program at Cal Arts studying drum set with Joe Labarbera, Percussion with Randy Gloss and Tabla with Swapan Chaudhuri.
Steven Liu recieved his B.A. in Music Performance and his M.F.A. in Jazz Performance from UCI. During his time at UCI he studied bass and composition under the tutelage of David Young, Doug Bayse, Darek Oleszkiewicz, and Kei Akagi. Steve currently works as a freelance musician, subbing for many Southern California orchestras including the San Bernadino Symphony and the Redlands Symphony. Steve leads and plays with many small jazz ensembles around Orange County. He also teaches private bass lessons as well as at many schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Stefan Talmadge has been playing upright bass for 10 years and electric bass for 4 years. He began playing bass in junior high for the school orchestra in Santa Barbara, Ca. Stefan is currently attending UC Irvine as an undergraduate student majoring in Jazz Performance and Mechanical Engineering.
